When Dr. Hilleman passed away recently, two medical leaders (Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and Dr. Paul A. Offit, chief of infectious diseases at Children’s Hospital in Philadephia) said that he had probably saved more lives than any other scientist in the 20th century.

Although vaccine research, development and production is an extremely challenging and costly endeavor, Merck’s commitment to protecting public health through disease prevention continues to gain momentum today.

Our commitment to innovation in developing breakthrough medicines and vaccines is tied to our strongest tradition—that of serving the health needs of society. That commitment has been guided by the words of our modern-day founder, George W. Merck:  “We try never to forget that medicine is for the people,” he said in 1950. “It is not for the profits. The profits follow, and if we have remembered that, they have never failed to appear.”
